From liver to glowing skin: The science behind Milk Thistle’s medicinal might - Times of India (1)

Effective soft milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a flowering plant with a long history of use as a natural remedy for a variety of conditions, particularly liver and gallbladder disorders.

It was first found in the Mediterranean region and has since become known for its therapeutic properties because of its active constituent, referred to assilymarin. Silymarin is a flavonoid mixture that has antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activity.

Liver health and detoxification

Milk Thistle is one of the most widely tested herbs in alternative medicine. For instance, silymarin protects liver cells from various toxins such as alcohol, acetaminophen, and environmental toxins by stabilizing the membranes of the liver cell and promoting regeneration of the damaged liver tissue.

Studies have indicated that milk thistle is useful in many conditions, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects

The lactating thorn's strong antioxidative properties have been shown to suppress oxidative stress, a condition associated with aging as well as several chronic ailments. Free radicals neutralized by silymarin are said to relieve inflammation across the body, thus benefiting patients suffering from conditions such as arthritis, asthma, and other inflammatory bowel diseases.

Besides being anti-inflammatory, it also participates in liver protection and slows the development of certain diseases.

Supports skin health

Emerging research holds evidence that milk thistle might even contribute to healthy skin. Antioxidants will be able to ameliorate skin damage resulting from ultraviolet light and environmental stressors. Some research suggests that silymarin may improve conditions such as acne and eczema due to its anti-inflammatory nature.

Some topical preparations are also being studied for their benefits against skin aging and skin damage from sun exposure.

Aids in managing diabetes

Apart from the fact that milk thistle controls blood sugar, it is one of the benefits for diabetes patients, specifically, type 2 diabetes patients. Evidence from studies shows that silymarin enhances insulin sensitivity and lowers levels of glucose in the blood. Its property as an antioxidant also limits oxidative damage due to diabetes complications.

So, even if milk thistle is an exciting opportunity, it should be adopted as a complementary therapy with conventional treatment under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Potential cancer-fighting properties

Preclinical studies have been launched to evaluate the anticancer properties of milk thistle. In vitro and animal studies suggest that silymarin may inhibit cancer cell proliferation and enhance the effectiveness of certain drug treatments.

The inhibition of cancer cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis-programmed cell death-are believed to be the two things that mediate these actions. Although promising, human trials are required to validate these claims.Milk thistle is one of the strongest natural remedies known to provide lots of medicinal benefits, but mainly for liver health, detoxification, and antioxidant protection. Moreover, it has been generally considered safe. But, for some drugs, it is capable of influencing them. There should be consultation with doctors before it is added to a regimen in one's life. Research is continuing, and thus, milk thistle, in the future, might be proven an ally best worthy in natural health and disease prevention.Dr. Preeti Nagar, Dietitian at NIIMS Medical College & Hospital
