Sometimes, life throws curveballs even when you're a former NFL quarterback. Mark Sanchez, once a rising star for the New York Jets, found himself in the crosshairs of 'Saturday Night Live' after a rather tumultuous week.
This past week, 'SNL' didn't hold back, using its 'Weekend Update' segment to poke fun at the struggling Jets and their former quarterback, Mark Sanchez. The humor stemmed from Sanchez's arrest in Indianapolis, following an incident involving a delivery driver. The former athlete was allegedly involved in a drunken altercation that led to him being stabbed.
Host Colin Jost quipped, 'Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has been accused of drunkenly assaulting a delivery driver before the driver stabbed him. The penalties offset, repeat first down.' He continued with the punchline, 'If convicted, Sanchez could be sent to prison, or worse, back to the Jets.'
But here's where it gets controversial... Sanchez, now 38 years old, is facing some serious legal trouble. He could face up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for allegedly assaulting 69-year-old Perry Tole. Tole claims he stabbed Sanchez in self-defense. The prosecutors have upped the ante, upgrading the charges to a felony, citing battery involving serious bodily injury. Initially, Sanchez was charged with three misdemeanors, including public intoxication and battery.
Sanchez played for the Jets from 2009 to 2012, leading them to the AFC Championship game twice. However, the Jets haven't seen the playoffs since 2010, marking the longest current drought in the league. He played for Philadelphia, Dallas, and Washington after his time with the Jets. The incident occurred while Sanchez was in Indianapolis to commentate on the Colts-Raiders game for Fox Sports. After undergoing surgery for stab wounds, he was released from the hospital and immediately taken to jail. He posted a $300 cash bond and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He is scheduled to return to court in early November.
